From 16 to 17 April 2021, Maximilian I's casket lay in state in St. Peter's Basilica, during which around 50 people paid their respects. On the 18 of April morning, the funeral of Pope Pius XIV was held in St. Peter's Basilica by Pope Leo XIV. This was the first time that a pope had attended a funeral for his predecessor.
