History

The post was established by in 2018 under President Ameed Haddad. The position evolved from the Chief of the Counterterrorism Unit (CTU) which transformed into VIA Director but existed primarily unofficially. Throughout the years, it had further evolved and it's duties further defined by tradition, congressional acts, and Executive Orders. Before 2023, the VIA had the dual responsibility of domestic and foreign intelligence, and different directors had a different leaning and preference toward one or another, while some attempted to maintain a balanced approach. Following the Great Intelligence Purge, the VIA solely focuses on foreign intelligence, which was further solidified by the National Security Act of 2023.

Order of succession

The order of succession determines which official shall act and perform the functions and duties of the director in the event the director dies, resigns, or otherwise unable to perform their duties. The official will serve as Acting Director. If the official is already serving in an acting capacity, or otherwise not eligible according to law, the order skips to the next person in line. However, the president retains discretion to depart from the list in designating an acting director.
