Pope Leo XIV aka Dr Gabriel Leo Barclay (9th February 1945~) was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City and Malta. He became the third pope after Pope Pius XVI in 2021. Leo became known as "Pope Emeritus" upon his resignation and retains the title until his death. Pope Young I succeeded the position of pope, who is the current head of the Catholic Church, the bishop of Rome and sovereign of the Vatican City. Pope Leo XIV returned as the Sovereign after the passing of the late Pope Young I.
Leo XIV was given the position of supreme pontiff[1] (pontifex maximus or summus pontifex), Roman pontiff (Romanus pontifex) or sovereign pontiff, is the bishop of Rome (or historically the patriarch of Rome), head of the Catholic Church, and has also served as the head of state or sovereign of the Papal States and later Rome since the eighth century. From a Catholic viewpoint, the primacy of the bishop of Rome is largely derived from his role as the apostolic successor to Saint Peter[2], to whom primacy was conferred by Jesus, who gave Peter the Keys of Heaven and the powers of "binding and loosing", naming him as the "rock" upon which the Church would be built.
